Entrevista a Friends With The Enemy

Haha, Well I’m definitely the ‘mum’ of the band. If im not at band practice the boys can fuck around for hours and get little done. So I’m always the one who keeps band practice on track.

We call Callan our guitarist Pop, because he’s very organised when it comes to touring. Stu our other guitarist still impresses me to this day with his talent, even after 17 years. He’s also the farter of the band, and will clear the room with his farts. Haha.

And our bass player and drummer are the jokers of the band. Lots of laughs with those 2.

if you are friends with the enemy, then are you enemies with the friend? Tell us about the origin of the band’s name, although we all think we know where it came from.

I’m definitely a positive person and don’t like to think we are enemies of any friends. Haha.

And yep, you’re probably guessing our band name comes From No Use For A Name song ‘Friends Of The Enemy’ and you would be correct. At the time we searched the name Friends Of The Enemy, and there was already a band called that, so we just changed OF to WITH. Haha.

Which has been the best experience you have had as a band? Which has been the worst?

There are lots of best experiences. Playing with all our favourite bands we grew up listening to is always amazing. From NUFAN, To Strung Out, to Lagwagon.

We toured Japan a few years ago which was incredible. Such an amazing country. Our old drummer quit the band just as we announced we were touring there, so we had Duka join the band, and he had only played with us for 3 weeks before we went over there. Haha. He pulled it off and did awesome.

Worst experience was when we were in America back in 2010, and we had a full month tour planned, and after the first week it was cancelled. Shit promoter made broken promises. But it was still an experience, and we still had an amazing holiday, just sucked the shows got cancelled.

That’s awesome we had an impact in Argentina! We had no idea.

It was such a good time when we released that EP. We were in America at the time and didn’t realise so many people would love it. I sent it to Skatepunkers, and it just blew up from there. We were getting messages from people all over the world saying. It was unbelievable. So having it up on Skatepunkers was definitely a positive thing for us to get our name out.

Local scene is… Ok. If you compare it to other counties, the local scene is terrible. We don’t have as many people here in Australia, so shows can vary. When we support big bands the shows are awesome, but if it’s just a standard local show, it can be pretty quiet.

We go have some great fast punk bands here. Our friends No Quarter are amazing. Also Hack The Mainframe and Fake News. We play a lot of shows with those 3 bands and it’s always a fun time. They play hard and fast too!

A new album finally! We have the songs ready to go, we just need to record them. So hopefully the world comes out of quarantine soon, and we can get into recording.

Stu and I have been recording some videos of our songs acoustically while we’ve been on lock down. So expect a few more acoustic songs too!

Contanos un poco sobre la banda. Quien es el musicalmente dotado? Quien está realmente loco? Quien es el que maneja los hilos?

Jaja, bueno, definitivamente soy la ‘mamá’ de la banda. Si no estoy en los ensayos, los chicos pueden joder durante horas y hacer poco. Así que siempre soy yo quien mantiene los ensayos de la banda encaminados.

Llamamos a Callan nuestro guitarrista Pop, porque es muy organizado cuando se trata de giras. Nuestro otro guitarrista hasta el día de hoy me impresiona con su talento, incluso después de 17 años. También es el flatulento de la banda, y arrasa la habitación con sus pedos. Jaja.

Y nuestro bajista y baterista son los bromistas de la banda. Muchas risas con esos 2.

Si ustedes son amigos con el enemigo, entonces son enemigos con el amigo? Contanos sobre el origen del nombre de la banda, aunque todos creemos saber de donde viene.

Definitivamente soy una persona positiva y no me gusta pensar que somos enemigos de ningún amigo. Jaja.

Y sí, probablemente estés adivinando que el nombre de nuestra banda proviene de la canción ‘Friends Of The Enemy’ de No Use For A Name y estarías en lo correcto. En ese momento buscamos el nombre Friends Of The Enemy, y ya había una banda llamada así, así que cambiamos OF por WITH. Jaja.

Cual fué la mejor experiencia que tuvieron como banda? Y la peor?

Hay un montón de buenas experiencias. Tocar con todas nuestras bandas favoritas que crecimos escuchando siempre es increíble. De NUFAN, a Strung Out, a Lagwagon.

Recorrimos Japón hace unos años, lo que fue increíble. Un país tan asombroso. Nuestro baterista anterior nos dejó justo cuando anunciamos la gira, por lo que Duka se unió a la banda, y solo había tocado juntos durante 3 semanas antes de que fuéramos a Japón. Jaja. Lo logró y lo hizo genial.

La peor experiencia fue cuando estábamos en Estados Unidos en 2010, teníamos planeado un tour de un mes, y después de la primera semana fue cancelado. El promotor de mierda hizo promesas que no cumplió. Pero aún así fue una experiencia, y además tuvimos unas vacaciones increíbles, solamente apestó que los shows se cancelaron.

¡Eso es increíble, tuvimos un impacto en Argentina! No tenía idea.

Fue un buen momento cuando lanzamos ese EP. Estábamos en Estados Unidos en ese momento y no nos dimos cuenta de que a mucha gente le encantaría. Lo envié a Skatepunkers, y desde allí explotó. Recibíamos mensajes de personas de todo el mundo. Fue increíble. Así que tenerlo en Skatepunkers fue definitivamente algo positivo para dar a conocer nuestro nombre.

La escena local está … Bien. Si lo comparamos con otros países, la escena local es terrible. No tenemos tanta gente aquí en Australia, por lo que los shows pueden variar. Cuando somos soporte de las bandas grandes, los shows son increíbles, pero si es solo un show local puede ser bastante tranquilo.

Tenemos algunas grandes bandas rápidas de punk aquí. Nuestros amigos de No Quarter son increíbles. También Hack The Mainframe y Fake News. Tocamos muchos shows con esas 3 bandas y siempre es divertido. ¡También tocan duro y rápido!

¡Un nuevo álbum finalmente! Tenemos las canciones listas, solo tenemos que grabarlas. Esperemos que el mundo salga pronto de la cuarentena y podamos comenzar a grabar.
